Well the past week has been chaotic for us.
We started off the week with Sunday, a lazy day where we stayed in because we were both feeling sick.
Later in the evening we got a call from my mom telling us that Herman's dad was in the hospital with heart pains. Herman immediately got on the phone to try and get more details, and we were up practically all night as details became available.
In order to make it less confusing, I'm going to tell the tale in chronological order.
Sunday Evening:
Herman's dad to the hospital, kept overnight for observation.
Mom called to let us know
Herman gets on the phone, calls everyone, nobody knows what is going on, other than he's in the hospital.
We keep in touch with those who are at the hospital, and the situation quickly gets worse
around 11 pm our time Herman's dad's heart stops beating and just quivers. He is dead for 5 minutes before they are able to revive him. (Thank God he was in the hospital... otherwise he would have been gone)
Doctors make the decision to medi- vac him to Anchorage, we make the decision to fly up, as it doesn't look like Herman's dad is going to make it.
Thankfully my mom has a lot of miles, and is able to fly us up for free.
Pray, try to sleep
Monday:
Get up, fatigued due to lack of sleep and go to work.
I spend the day figuring out how to get a sub for Tuesday in my room.
We both make it thru the day in a daze
Get home, pack, and make our way to the airport
Our flight leaves around 9:30 and we fly all night
Tuesday:
Arrive in Anchorage in the wee hours of the morning, rent a car, and head immediately to the hospital, where Herman's dad is in ICU at the native hospital.
It was 1 degree when we arrived. I felt like the fellow in Cool Runnings who arrives in Calgary from Jamaica and runs back into the airport to put on all the clothing he owns, plus the bag, and is still cold
We stay by his bedside until 6 am. He wakes up around 4 and carry's on a conversation, but had no idea what has happened. He could not remember anything for more than 5 seconds, so for 2 hours we were repeating ourselves over and over again.
Go to where we were staying, try to get some sleep
Get up around 12 and head back to the hospital. Stay all day, into the evening. Memory issues still a problem, but less so.
Herman's dad is stable enough to be moved out of ICU
Head home to get some sleep.
Wednesday:
Get up, go to the hospital.
spend the day there
Dinner at my friend Mary's house
Thursday:
Spend all day at the hospital with Herman's dad.
Herman and his brother Sasha start getting into it with each other
Herman's dad begins to move around with help
Friday:
All day at the hospital again. Sasha and Herman still at odds.
Memory is more stable, not needing to repeat things as often. Herman's dad has finally understood what happened to him, and we talk about life changes to be made.
Decision is made for him to move to WA/ OR to be closer to family. (his brother, and us)
Cardiologist visits, describes different scenarios, and treatments for them
Herman's dad is cheduled for an angiogram on Monday to see how bad things are
Saturday:
Less time spent at the hospital.
Herman's dad is up and walking around on his own.
Explored Anchorage a bit
Crashed a birthday party of a friend of a friend after Vespers.
Back to the hospital to say goodnight
Sunday:
Quick trip to check up on Bill
Church
Brunch out with Nikole's friend
Herman went to hospital, I went out with some friends
Both at hospital
Dinner at Herman's cousin's house
Airport for our trip home
Monday:
Flight arrives 5:30 am, and we sleep all morning.
Herman's dad has his angiogram, they decide no operations are necessary, and that his health can be treated with medicines and a new healthy lifestyle.
My niece's birthday-- we go over to celebrate with pizza and games.
Sleep.....
